Tucked away on a leafy corner in the West Village, Café Reggio—with its warm ambiance and old-world charm—feels like the perfect backdrop to meet one of music’s most exciting new voices. Over cappuccinos and quiet laughter, we sat down with emerging singer-songwriter Luna Grey to talk music, personal style, and the rhythm of life in the city that never stops inspiring. From her soulful sound to her fearless fashion sense, she’s carving out her own lane—and we’re here for it.
How did you first get into music, and when did you know it was more than just a passion?
Around the time when I was 13 I started writing poetry which became my main emotional outlet. Shortly after, I found myself quickly reciting it back with certain rhythm that naturally became rap and melodies. I had a revelation a couple years later at 18 when it felt like nothing was fulfilling in my life except for music and I decided that I was going to pursue it wholeheartedly, against many people's advice.
How would you describe your sound to someone listening to Luna Grey for the first time?
I would describe it as melodic, emotional, R&B that is under a hip hop umbrella. I tend to gravitate towards ambient vibes, but I also do pretty well with energetic, high pace songs where I rap in my distinct cadence.
What inspires your songwriting—are there certain moods, stories, or personal experiences that guide your lyrics?
Usually when I write songs they just pour out of me. I believe we are all vessels of so many experiences and perspectives. Mainly, I try to not think when I write songs but to only feel and release whatever my spirit leads me to.
Fashion and music are both forms of self-expression. How would you describe your personal style off stage—and does it differ when you’re performing?
I find my personal style to be a blend of sensual street wear, and chic, dressy statement pieces. I love standing out with my attire as I believe it tells a story for us before we open our mouths. When I'm performing I usually wear lots of jewelry and accessories and I may wear something bedazzled, sexy or shocking.
Is there a go-to piece—an outfit, accessory, or even a ritual—that makes you feel ready to step into your spotlight?
I love wearing my diamond chains and having my nails, eye lashes and makeup done to perfection. I am a big accessories girl and I enjoy things like body chains and eye catching belts. I always visualize before shows and studio sessions and I usually see the outcome of the performance before I execute it.
What are you wearing today?
Today I am wearing a silver, silky, high neck blouse, a silver chrome wrap skirt, grey boots and my NOTTEVERA Kira Black Mini Croc Embossed Crossbody Leather Bag.
If your latest single were a fashion look, what would it be and why?
It would be a leather jacket. My latest single is called 'everyday' and a good leather jacket is the perfect staple to wear on the daily.
What does New York City mean to you creatively? Has it shaped your music or your sense of self?
I am thankful to be based in a place that as soon as I walk out the door, I can feel the electrical current and energy of infinite potential. It has absolutely pushed me to be my best self because it is eclectic, challenging and inspiring. I am constantly exposed to different cultures, experiences and styles and I love the endless growth I can tap into here.
Where can people find your music and keep up with what’s next for Luna Grey?
